Dreoilín Publications

Well-known motor and aviation historian Bob Montgomery established Dreoilín Publications in 1999 to fill a major gap in Irish Transport publishing, particularly in the fields of motoring and aviation history.

We publish a number of hard and soft-backed titles including THE IRISH ROADSIDE CAMERA series that tell the remarkable history of motoring in Ireland and are notable for their excellent photographic content. A new book in The Irish Roadside Camera series – MOTORING’S GOLDEN YEARS 1919-1939 – has just been published and is the third volume in The Irish Roadside Camera series. Telling the story of motoring in the years between the two World Wars, the book is illustrated with a collection of wonderful photographs, many of which have either not been seen in print before or have not been seen for eighty or more years. The series has been critically acclaimed and will be of interest to anyone with an interest in Irish motoring, or indeed, Irish social history. This third and latest book in The Irish Roadside Camera Series – MOTORING’S GOLDEN YEARS 1919-1939 – is now available priced at just €28.00 incl. postage in Ireland.

Other recent titles include our best-selling A LIFETIME’S COLLECTING – The Legendary Car Collection of Jim BolandTHE WAY WE WERE – The Motoring Photographs of George Stuart and GREAT DRIVES – 22 Great Irish Roads, based on Bob Montgomery’s acclaimed series in THE IRISH TIMES.

A LIFETIME’S COLLECTING details the cars in Jim Boland’s remarkable world-class collection and is a must for anyone with an interest in old cars. All the cars in Jim’s collection are photographed and described and the story of how Jim came to build up the collection is told in Jim’s inimitable style.

George Stuart has been photographing cars almost all his life and his unique eye for the unusual is to the fore in the marvelous collection of photographs in THE WAY WE WERE. The unique, the unusual and the commonplace (but often not recorded) are all here in this wonderful book.

Bob Montgomery’s GREAT DRIVES – 22 Great Irish Roads was published earlier this year and is based on Bob’s ever-popular column in The Irish Times. Each of the selection of drives in the book are photographed and detailed on a map and a free app (Great Drives) prepared by The Irish Times is available to download at irishtimes.com/mobile. These roads are not the usual tourist trails and often lead to unexpected areas of great beauty and historical interest – all told in Bob’s unique style.

Dreoilin Transport Albums

In addition, we’ve developed a range of inexpensive publications – Dreoilín Albums – in association with the Archive of The Royal Irish Automobile Club, which offer a keenly priced library of transport subjects. New titles in the Dreoilín Album series are constantly being added and the series (currently with 17 titles) has grown into an important, and acclaimed, source of material for Irish Transport history. The series covers such diverse subjects as early motoring in Ireland, famous personalities and Irish motor sport events and in the future we also plan to cover Irish aviation history. New titles are added on a regular basis and all Albums are A5 in size with 32 pages and around 35 photographs.

Our Latest Dreoilin Albums

Our latest Dreoilin Albums tell the story of the TALLAGHT MOTOR RACES 1935-1948 by Robin McCullagh and of THE ROYAL IRISH AUTOMOBILE CLUB by Bob Montgomery. Other recent titles include THE INTERNATIONAL ULSTER TROPHY RACES 1934-1955 by John S Moore and THE BRAY MOTOR RACES 1934-1935, also by Robin McCullagh.
